For a documentary series one of our teams was accompanied during the inspection of rotor blades of a wind turbine.
Before the repair of rotor blades, they have to be inspected. Potential damage and wear must be identified. The results of these inspections are the basis for all necessary repairs. Inspections and repairs thus go hand in hand, forming a cycle that is repeated several times during the service life of a wind turbine.
Well-trained personnel can inspect three rotor blades with relatively little effort in less than a workday. No expensive specialized machinery, such as cranes, is required. The blades are accessed from the outside using rope access. The interior of the blades is also inspected for damages. All that's necessary is a van, three motivated colleagues with personal protective equipment, and climbing equipment. With these simple means, and with the appropriate experience, the rotor blades can be inspected very thoroughly.
